Scully Facts
Dana Katherine Scully is a medical doctor who was recruited by the F.B.I right out of medical school. She was assigned to be Mulder's partner in hopes that her strict scientific view would help debunk the x-files. She was extremely close to her father, William Scully, who died early in the series. Scully's father read to her fromMoby Dick when she was a child, leading her to call him Ahab and him to call her Starbuck. Scully's dog is named Queequeg after the harpoonist in Moby Dick. Scully's sister, Melissa, was killed by someone who mistook Melissa for Scully. Scully's brother, Bill, Jr. is in the navy and feels Mulder is responsible for much pain inflicted upon Scully. Scully was abducted in the second season, either by aliens or government officials, which is the probable cause of her contraction of cancer. When Scully walked through a metal detector, she found that there was a metallic implant in the base of her neck, probably placed ther by her abductors. The removal of this implant is what is believed to have caused the onset of her cancer. While Scully was on the brink of death, Mulder found the cure to her cancer -- a metallic chip similar to the one removed from Scully's neck. When this chip was implanted, Scully's inoperable cancer went into remission. Later, Mulder and Scully discovered that her abductors removed her ovaries and used them to create clones. While investigating a murder, Scully meets an orphaned three-year old girl with a terminal illness. This girl, Emily, turns out to be Scully's daughter. Although Scully does everything she can to prevent it, the child dies only days after Scully discovers she is Emily's mother.
Gillian Anderson Facts
Gillian Anderson was an extremely rebelous teenager. She had a blue mohawk, lost her virginity at age 13, and lived with a man a decade her senior in abondoned warehouses. She also sang backup in his band dressed only in bandages. Her only work other than The X-Files was a supporting role in the drama, The Turning. Anderson spent a year doing nothing but auditioning. She lived off of unemployment checks for that year. The day she found out she got the part was the day she received her last unemployment check. She was 24 years old when the first season of The X-files began (Anderson was born in 1968). Within a year, she married Klyde Klutz, a production designer on the show, and was pregnant with her daughter, Piper Maru. Anderson is now divorced and lives in Los Angelas with her daughter and dog, Cleo. Anderson wants to more strenuously pursue a carreer in film and hopes to do this once the series ends. She has said she would like to make several X-files movies in the future.
Mulder Facts
Fox William Mulder received a degree in sociology from Oxford before joining the F.B.I. He was a promising young agent who rose quickly in the ranks. One day, he came across piles of files that dealt with the paranormal and were basically ignored by the Bureau. Mulder began to work on these cases, labeled the X-files. He was pushed forward in this work due to his determination to find the truth and to find out what happened to his sister, Samantha, whose alien abduction he witnessed as a child. Mulder continues to search for Samantha but has found only adult as well as child clones of her. He has also met with what may be an adult Samantha raised by the Cigarette Smoking Man (CSM) as his daughter. However, this Samantha could also be a clone. Mulder obsessively eats sunflower seeds and is addicted to porn movies. Mulder's father was killed by Alex Krycheck, an agent who was partnered with Mulder when Scully was missing. Krycheck has been revealed as a worker for the Syndicate (the bad guys, including the Cigarette-Smoking Man) who also seems to have his own agenda. It has also been revealed that Mulder's father was somehow connected to the Syndicate in its early stages. CSM and Mulder's mother had some sort of relationship in the past. It is a popular belief that CSM is either Mulder's or Samantha's real father. When Mulder founded the x-files, his was dating another agent named Diana Fowley(played by Mimi Rogers). This agent appeared in "The End," the last episode of the fifth season. She was killed by a worker for the Sydicate (perhaps even CSM) in this episode. Mulder was seen wearing a wedding ring in a flahback in one episode. According to Chris Carter, this was intentional and will be explained later in the series. Perhaps he was once married to Agent Diana Fowley. Late in the fifth season, Mulder started to doubt his belief in aliens and the paranormal, thinking that everything he had witnessed had been some elaborate government charade to cover up covert government actions. However, in the movie, Mulder found proof of alien life.
David Duchovny Facts
David Duchvny was almost finished his disertation to earn a graduate degree in English Lituratue from Yale University when he decided to leave school and pursue an acting career. The X-Files is not by any means the first work of Duchovny. He appeared as a transvestite in Twin Peaks and was also in The Red Shoe Diaries. He later starred in the movie Playing God and had guest appearances in The Larry Sanders Show and Dr. Katz. Duchovny is married to actor Tea Leoni and had the production of The X-Files moved from Toronto to Los Angelas so he could be closer to her. Several interviews given by Duchovny paint him as being rather arrogant. He has been quoted as saying the feminist movement has gone too far, attempting to make women more than equal and that sexual harrassment should not include things like comments made toward women. He has also publically denounced Gillian Anderson for complaining about her salary. Anderson, like many actresses, gets paid aomething like $10,000 less than Duchovny each episode. She claims this is because she is a woman and either he should be paid less or she should be paid more -- it should be even. Duchovny claims Anderson should blame herself or her agent for this salary discrepency, not her sex. Duchovny has also been quoted as saying that most of the plots of The X-files are completely unbelievable and, if it wasn't for him, the show would suck. Both Duchovny and Anderson admit they do not spend time together outside of work. They have said that they can count on each other to be professional and show up knowing their lines and prepared to work, but they work together 15 hours a day and have very separate personal lives. Duchovny would not mind seeing the series end any time soon, but has said he is interestedin doing more X-files movies. Duchovny lives in Los Angelas with his wife and dog, Blue.
Other Important X-Files Facts
NOTE: The following facts are all from The X-Files: Fight the Future, so if you haven't seen it and plan to, you may not want to read this section of the page.
In the movie, we found out that the Syndicate was in contact with extra-terrestrial creatures who were planning to take over Earth. The Syndicate was using bees to implant diseases into corn, which would then be distributed to people throughout the world. Once the human population was overcome with this disease, all world leaders would call a state of emergency and a specific medical association would basically tak e over the running of the world. The member of this association are under the control of the Syndicate. The takeover was to happen around a major holiday, when people would be away from their homes. The Syndicate was under the impression that the aliens would make all humans, except for those connected with the Sydicate slaves, but found out that the aliens were planning to use humans as hosts for an extra-terrestrial species left dormant on earth for millions of years. Humans would be needed essentially as cocoons for the aliens, which often appear in the form of black oil. The Syndicate attempted to stop Mulder from finding out about their plans by kidnapping Scully and using her as a host for one of the extra-terrestrial life forms. However, Mulder was able to get the antidote and used it to save Scully, while simultaneously harming many other extra-terrestrials who were living inside of inanimate humans. As a result, the U.F.O. containing these creatures left Earth and also left the relationship between the Syndicate and the aliens uncertain.
Must-see episodes
"Bad Blood," an episode from the fifth season of The X-files is one of the greatest episodes ever, especially for die-hard fans. In this episode, Mulder and Scully each tell their own side of what happened while investigating what could be vampire attacks. Mulder's description of events makes Scully seem more skeptical then ever while Scully's version makes Mulder seem more insanely reaching than ever. The exaggeration of Mulder and Scully's characteristics make the episode hilarious and a definite must-see.
"Post-Modern Prometheus" was nominated for numerous emmys for the show's fifth season. This episode is all in black and white and centers around a modern-day Frankenstein monster and his mad scientist. The residents of the small town housing the monster are a perfect example of today's version of uneducated people. Obsessed with Jerry Springer, these residents give the episode a good degree of humor. If that's not enough for you, there's a good concert scene in which Mulder and Scully dance, making "Post-modern Promeetheus" a must-see.
Of course, the true X-files fan can't miss the trilogy in which Scully is abducted. This, the first X-files arc, occured in the middle of the second season and was made so Gillian Anderson would be able to take ten days off to give birth to her daughter. This abduction led to Scully's cancer and also caused Scully to have serious internal struggle between what she had experienced and what she knew as scientific. It also caused Mulder to be even more persistant in uncovering the wrongs committed by the Syndicate and CSM, whom he believed had played some part in Scully's abduction. Scully's cancer resulted in several episodes dealing with Scully's family and her struggle between science and faith, something earlier only lighly touched upon. Thus, to understand much of The X-files, one must see "Duane Barry," "The Ascension," and "One Breath."
The two episodes in which Scully finds out she has a daughter, "Christmas Carol" and "Emily," were aired in the fifth season. These episodes are virtually the only episodes about Scully's emotions. They are extremely well-written and well-acted and, in order to understand many of the following episodes (and even some of the previous episodes), one must see these two.
